Dr. Mirica Karlovits from National Institute of Chemistry had the opportunity to attend the Cell Symposia: Chemical Solutions for a Sustainable Plastics Future, organized in partnership with Utrecht University, held in Amsterdam, Netherlands (October 13-15, 2025).

Topics of the symposia included:

  • Green chemistry, sustainable synthesis, and alternative feedstocks
  • Recyclable-by-design: precision polymer synthesis
  • Bioplastics and biodegradable polymers
  • Plastics recycling, upcycling, and repurposing
  • Challenges for risk assessment of micro-nanoplastics in the environment
  • Policy, regulation, and monitoring

During the 3 days event, dr. Mirica Karlovits presents two research projects related to the UPSTREAM project:

  • Industrial symbiosis of filtered and collected river-based microplastics (Authors: dr. Mirica Karlovits, dr. Igor Karlovits, dr. Blaž Likozar and dr. Uroš Novak).
  • Public opinion wars on social media and their influence on policymakers regarding microplastics (Authors: dr. Mirica Karlovits, dr. Blaž Likozar and dr. Uroš Novak).

It was inspiring to exchange ideas with researchers, policymakers, and innovators all striving for a more sustainable plastics future.
