We attended the event “Slovenia and Europe for Clean Waters: Innovations and Solutions Against Plastic Pollution”, which took place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
The event was organised by National Institute of Chemistry and National Institute of Biology.

The event focused on presenting European and national projects in Slovenia that address the issue of plastic pollution in the aquatic environment, including microplastics and nanoplastics.
The event brought together representatives from academia, industry, researchers, non-governmental organisations, journalists, and all those concerned about the future of our waters.

Participants were able to:

  • Listen to the keynote lecture by João Frias, a senior researcher at the Marine & Freshwater Research Centre of the Atlantic Technological University (ATU), based in Galway, Ireland, with over 15 years of experience in marine litter, microplastic pollution, and ocean literacy.
  • Learned about 21 projects (including UPSTREAM project) that are developing innovative approaches to detecting, monitoring, and reducing plastic pollution in rivers, lakes, and seas.
  • Participated in an interactive networking workshop aimed at creating new partnership and collaboration.

The event was an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, network, and discuss the future directions of Slovenia and Europe in protecting our aquatic environment.
